as told by Della Walker - NSW
How a boy named Buillbree had his hasty wish came true.
Synopsis:
Why the Koala cries is about a little boy who loved climbing trees. The little boys name was Buillbree. One day he asked his mother could he go and climb some trees, his mother said yes on the condition that he didn’t wonder off too far because the Dirranggan women could be near. The Dirranggan woman was a powerful witch that was full of evil. She was always a trouble to the tribes. Buillbree promised his mother that he would not stray and wonder away to far as he set off to climb the trees. He climbed many trees, having a great time but lost track of the time and where he was. His imagination filled with wishes. One wish he had was that he could live in the trees forever so that he wouldn’t have anyone telling him what to do. The Dirranggan woman heard Buillbree’s request and summoned up her great powers to transform him into the first Koala. When Buillbree noticed what was happening he screamed for his mother. His mother heard his cries and started running towards the screams but when she saw what was making all the noise she kept on going screaming out to her son Buillbree. Buillbree could not talk and all that came out of his mouth was a pitiful wail, a crying sound. And that is why the Koala cries.
