Series 05
STORY 2
The Snake and the Goanna
as told by Josie Boyle - WA
A friendship gone bad and a grudge ‘til this day.
Synopsis:
There once lived a snake who had a special friend the goanna. The snake and the goanna played together everyday.
One day the snake and the goanna were bored so they went to find some ochre paints to paint themselves with.
When they found the ochre at the river, the goanna had to do all the work because she had the hands. She started to paint the snake, she painted dots and lines and soon all the paint was used up.
The goanna got upset because all the paint was usedon the snake and the goanna was still brown and not as pretty and colourful as the snake.
Snake was being selfish and for the first time they began to fight. Snake bit goanna, so she had to go quickly to her special medicine tree. This tree would stop goanna from being poisoned by the snake.
Now the snake and goanna are no longer friends and still today, when the snake and goanna meet, they will have the same fight over the ochre paints.
