Story 03
Thukeri
as told by Veena Gollan - SA

Learn what happens when the greedy men don’t share

Synopsis:
This story is about two tribal men who lived on the shores of Lake Alexandria. One day the two men set off in their bark canoe to go fishing and they went to a place where they always caught the best and most delicious bream called Thukeri. As the day went on the men were catching more and more Thukeri and soon their canoe looked like it might sink because it was so full of fish. When they reached the shore a stranger came up to them and asked for some fish but the men would not share their catch with the stranger and told him they had only caught a few fish. The stranger walked away knowing that the two men were lying. Later on when the men were gutting the fish they saw that the Thukeri was full off sharp thin bones and could not take back the Thukeri to their families to eat because they would choke on the bone in the fish. The two men returned home in shame. The old people told them that now the tribe would be punished forever because of their greed.
