Manala The Monster Cod as told by Pauline McLeod - NSW

Learn about how the Murray River came into being.

Synopsis:
Manala the monster cod was very big and whenever Manala travelled across the land his body would destroy trees and shrubs and create trenches with his tail. Manala was starting to destroy the land, which concerned the people and animals of the land. Meetings were held but still Manala continued to destroy the land. Biamee, the creator spirit, did not like what Manala was doing and came down to earth. Biamee got two brothers, Jaramarra and Jarlanara to hunt and stop Manala. Jaramarra was the greatest hunter in the whole land and Jarlarnara was the greatest tracker.

Together the brothers set out to find Manala the Monster cod. When the brothers caught up with Manala, they found him in the Murray River, which he made.

The trenches that Manala made with his body became the rivers throughout the land now filled with fish including The Murray Cod.
