STORY 5
Wonga & Nudu
as told by Oodgeroo Noonuccal – QLD Stradbroke Island.
Two boys stray from their mother and brother sun teaches them a lesson.
Synopsis:
Wonga and Nudu went to the lagoon with the women hunters of their tribe to help gather food. But the boys soon grew tired of helping the women and went off on their own to play. When hungry they dug for grubs inside a rotting tree stump. But as they strayed further from the women, brother sun decided to teach them a lesson. He hid behind a huge black cloud and suddenly there was a thumping in the undergrowth nearby. The boys, terrified that they were being pursued by the dreaded Bunyip, fled back to the women. When they heard about the Bunyip, the women looked up into the sky, where the sun was shining once more and smiled wisely. They knew that the sun had played a trick on the boys sending wallaby to chase them back to the lagoon.
