STORY 2
How the Water got to the Plains
as told by Olga Miller – QLD Fraser Island.
See how treachery resulted in the life-giving water on the plains.
Synopsis:
This story is about an Aboriginal community who lived on a mountain. The tribe was worried because it had not rained for a long time and they were running out of water. Their wells were empty and when it rained the water ran down the side of the mountain into the sea.
When everyone from the tribe was asleep, two greedy men, Wee-ar-ree and Wall-wid-bit stole the last of the water and ran away with it. When the tribe discovered the water was missing, the elders held a meeting and this was when they saw the two men were gone. They found their tracks and the warriors quickly followed them down the mountain. When the warriors finally caught up with the men they took them back to the elders where they were punished. Wee-ar-ree was changed into the first Emu, and Wall-wid-bit was changed into the first blue-tongued lizard. Wherever the water had leaked onto the plains there were now billabongs with grass, flower and water lilies. That is how the water got to the plains.
